According to a brief biography found in 756-1-27, Oscar White was a Civil War veteran who arrived in Boulder in 1880. His wife, Mary, and their son joined him in 1885. Mr. White worked as a laborer and, later, as a gardener.
Information about family presumed to be in photo 2: Jane White and John F. White of Boone County, KY had five children: Siseley (b.1837), George (b.1838), Lucy Anne (b.1840), Oscar (b.1841), and Frances Emily (b.1842).
"John self-emancipated in 1843 (to escape being sold to the south). In 1846, he returned to emancipate Jane and the children. That night he appeared for them, Jane and the children were captured on the Ohio River's edge in Rabbit Hash. Her biological father/slaveholder, Benjamin Stephens, had them initially sold together, but that trader then sold them separated. Oscar and Frances were together in Cynthiana, KY, and eventually later separated while still young-- Frances remaining in Cynthiana, and Oscar to Tennessee. Frances later married in Cynthiana to Nick Vince (5 children) and later to [ ] Black (3 children). Jane had been taken to Missouri around 1862. In 1864, she was married to Dudley Carter. At this time, George and Oscar were serving in war. In 1866, each had mustered out of their regiments. Jane and Oscar were united around that time. Dudley wrote ads for Jane in an effort to locate her children - listing all but George. Oscar and Frances were eventually accounted for, and each travelled to Emporia, KS to reunite with their mother. There were no children between Dudley and Jane, though he "adopted" Jane's children as his. Frances' oldest daughter was born in 1859, and who I believe is in the photo. The photo - if Oscar, et al, would have to have been taken between 1867-1869, being close to the initial reunification of the family. Jennie then would have been 8, 9, or 10 in the photo." --from Jacquewyn Chambers-Martin, great-great granddaughter of John F. White.
