Description

This collection consists of photographs of hikes, camping trips, and other outings of the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club between 1916 and 1922. Very few of the hikers are identified.

History

The club was founded in 1898 as the Chautauqua Climbers Club, and in 1908 changed its name to the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club.
Ernest Greenman came to Boulder with his mother, Louise H. Greenman, and his sisters Nellie and Ethel, in 1896. His brothers Elbert and Alfred had already come to Boulder in 1890 and were in business. For further biographical information, see coll. BHS 316, Greenman Stores Company records.
Ernest "Dad" Greenman and his wife, Ermin "Ma", joined the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club in 1913. He worked on the preparation of hiking trails, planting apple trees in Gregory Canyon, posting warning signs, and other related work. According to Laurence T. Paddock, Greenman was seen hiking in the Chautauqua area as late as 1959, carrying a shovel to "help repair the trails."
