Call Number OH2006-VDate 2014Description When the South Boulder Creek drainage flooded during the Boulder County Flood of 2013, flowing water broke through Shannon and Howard Chinatti's basement window and filled that level of their house with seven feet of water. Shannon was alone at the time of the flood - Howard works in disaster recovery and was on his way to Montana to work on another flood recovery project. They tell of Shannon's experience during the flood, Howard's efforts to come back home and enter their flooded neighborhood in South Boulder, and their subsequent recovery efforts. Howard is able to tell about their personal experiences through the lens of many years of doing disaster recovery work. In addition, Howard describes working on recovery efforts for Frasier Meadows Retirement. Both Chinattis emphasize the way a community pulls together in events of this sort.

Call Number OH2007-VDate 2014Description Rattana Toi McDaniel, who moved from Thailand to Boulder with her American husband ten years ago, tells about her home country and her hometown of Chiang Mai. She relates how she came to meet her husband and tells the story about how she "trained' to live in Boulder - a place with a climate colder than she had ever experienced - by spending time in the walk-in freezer at the cooking school where she taught in Thailand! Although she misses easy access to Thai cooking ingredients, she talks about things she appreciates about Boulder, things she enjoys doing here, and the friendly nature of the people she has encountered.

Call Number OH2009-VDate 2015Description Mary Kate Rejouis, an ordained priest and rector of St. Aidan's Episcopal Church in Boulder, grew up in the Whittier neighborhood and was a student at Whittier Elementary School in the 1970s. She describes her years there with great affection and respect for the things it taught her - academically and in terms of values. She also talks about her years at Casey Junior High School; the close-knit nature of the Whittier neighborhood; the place of religion in her life, including her mission and experiences as priest at St. Aidan's; and other aspects of Boulder's history and culture - including the annual Bolder Boulder race.

Call Number OH2010-VDate 2015Description Don Burd is the head of the Buildings and Historic Preservation Department for Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department. He has worked for that department since 1980, and he talks about the department's growth (from 10 to more than 120 employees). He describes many preservation and restoration projects that his crew have undertaken, some of his favorite projects and restoration jobs, and some of the challenges involved in doing historic preservation work. He also talks about working with the Youth Corps program and with other volunteers. He tells about his years of living up at Walker Ranch as a caretaker, his great affection for the property, and his interest in the family that settled it.

Call Number OH2013Date 2015Description Alfred Howe, referred to as Bart in this interview, talks about his life in Boulder County and his career at IBM and StorageTek. Originally from Oklahoma, he and his wife Mary moved to the Boulder area in 1970, drawn in part by their love of the outdoors. He mentions some of the changes that he has witnessed over the 45 years that he's lived in the area, such as population growth and changes in the sports programs at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He praises the area's excellent school system and says that he enjoys the cultural entertainment opportunities in a university town. He discusses the inner workings of IBM and StorageTek, comparing them as companies and discussing the tension between the two companies initially until competition decreased as they began moving in different directions. He reflects on the Vietnam War and discusses how and why his ideas about that war changed over time. He speculates that the future will bring issues around water scarcity and fracking to Colorado.

He describes the road and land conditions in the area of Fourmile Canyon and Wallstreet during and after the flooding. He talks about communication and transportation difficulties. He describes evacuation efforts involving Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters and his own evacuation with the help of National Guard vehicles. He touches on the road repair efforts that followed.

He talks about the evolution of the station from 1979 on, as it changed from being mainly a music station to also including many spoken word programs. Among the programs discussed are Hemispheres, Connections, Feminist Frequencies, War Talk (later Peace Talk), and Morning Magazine. Edelstein describes the centrality of volunteers in running the station and producing its shows, the changes involved in becoming an NPR affiliate and dropping NPR affiliation, the development of the station's mission, the increasing provision of local news coverage, and the development of a team approach to news production.

She has been passionate about developing curricula for, and exposing children to, outdoor education, particularly through Fairview High School programs and the Cal-Wood Education Center. She also has contributed to butterfly counts for decades and published the popular guide, "Butterflies of the Colorado Front Range". In this wide-ranging interview, she talks about her college days, when it was uncommon and challenging to be a woman studying science; her work in biological curricula development; the International Baccalaureate Program at Fairview High School; recent effects of climate change on plants and butterflies; changes in science education and student attitudes and experiences over the years; and her travel to China. The interview concludes with her description of the ways in which her children and grandchildren are carrying on her biological interest and involvements.

Call Number OH2018Date 2015Description JoAnne Foster tells many stories of her and her husband's lives in Boulder. Her husband, Bob Foster, grew up in Boulder in the 1940s. She and Bob both worked for the Boulder Valley School District; Bob mainly as a coach and JoAnne mainly as a counselor. JoAnne describes the consolidation in 1960 of eleven small school districts that today cover Boulder County: the Boulder Valley RE-2 school district and the St. Vrain school district. Although JoAnne talks about working at Platt Junior High and Fairview High School, she talks most in depth about her years at Casey Junior High during the 1970s and 1980s under principal David Zeckser. She describes the great diversity of the school's population and the many approaches that were used to meet the individual needs of students at that time. She also talks about the 1960s and 1970s as a time of social upheaval, in terms of hippie culture and anti-war protests. As a side topic, JoAnne also explains the evolution of the restuarant scene in Boulder, from nearly non-existent before the 1970s when Boulder was a dry town, to the blossoming of it as a foodie mecca once the sale of alcohol was legalized.

These stories include speaking about people who mentored him, helping members of the public, dealing with members of the public who were violating the law, enforcing hunting regulations, suicides within the park system, the complications of moving the Stroh-Dickens barn, and his involvement in the consultations with Native Americans about Southdown Mountain.

She talks about students during the hippie era, changes in parenting style over the years, the Teen Parenting Program, an internship career education program she spearheaded, instituting a middle school to high school transition program, and the architecture of Fairview High School.
