She talks about the landscape and culture of her home country, her reasons for moving to Boulder, and her delight with living in this now-adopted city. She and her husband and daughters left Venezuela in part due to the deteriorating economic and political situation there. She talks about her enjoyment of the beauty of Boulder, the many people she has come to know here, and her deep appreciation of living in a place that feels safe.

Call Number OH1980-VDate 2014Description After saving enough money to travel abroad, Akiko Tohno moved to New York City from Japan, hoping to improve her English. She met the man who later became her husband because they both were looking for conversation partners - he to learn Japanese and she to learn English. After marrying, they moved to Boulder, her husband's hometown. Akiko talks about how Japan differs from the United States, things she misses about Japan, and also about the things she loves about Boulder, where she now feels at home. She particularly describes how the Boulder Public Librarly's English conversation class fostered friendships with people from other countries and her appreciation of the overall positive atmosphere of Boulder's library.

He describes the challenges related to traveling in dangerous flood conditions in order to capture photos to publish in the Daily Camera. He discusses some experiences that varioius team members had, especially in trying to reach some of the mountain towns. He offers insights about journalism in general and the photojournalism in particular. He talks about the extent of the flood damage and the resilience of people as they coped with the disaster. Lastly, he tells the stories behind some of the photos published in the book published by the Daily Camera, which is tltled "A Thousand Year Rain: The Historic Flood of 2013 in Boulder and Larimer Counties", and reflects on some of the individuals and families who were greatly affected by the severe flooding.

Call Number OH1984-VDate 2014Description Charlie Brennan, the science and environmental reporter for the Daily Camera newspapaer, describes covering the Boulder County Flood of 2013. He talks about his approach to reporting about the flood, contacts he used to obtain informatiion that would help readers understand what was happening, and the efforts that he and other reporters made in extraordinary circumstances to put together news stories and to get the paper out in spite of the challenges brought about by flood conditions and the complexity of the story. He explains various aspects of the flood, such as what is behind the nomenclature of calling it a 100-year flood or a 1000-year rain. He describes the devastation he observed in Jamestown and praises the efforts of Jamestown mayor Tara Schoedinger and the resiliency of the town's residents. He reflects on the importance of journalism during such an event; on things he would have done differently, with hindsight, including making better use of social media; and on the importance of historical ducments, such as oral histories, in helping journalists to do their work.

In this interview, she describes where she lived in Sudan, near the capital city of Khartoum, some of the traditions of her homeland that she treasured - such as the warm, supportive structure among women and the elaborate wedding customs; the reason that she and her husband immigrated to the United States; how she adjusted to life here, learned English, and created friendships; her enjoyment of the beautiful landscape and the friendly, helpful people she has met here; and how she now considers Boulder her home. She has special praise for the Boulder Public Library, its Outreach Program, and former outreach director Ghada Elturk for being instrumental in helping her feel at home in Boulder.

She describes many things she loves about Peru, but says that Boulder feels like home now. Not only does it have many similarities to her hometown in Peru, she also particularly enjoys the mountain landscape in Colorado, the safe and friendly feel of Boulder and the emphasis on a healthy lifestyle. She has made many friends in Boulder, with Americans and with other people who have moved here from all over the world, and she is enjoying teaching Spanish and building a business doing clothing alterations. She hopes at some point to be able to continue the nursing career she pursued in Peru.

She came here to take a job doing childcare for a family, but now works as a bilingual secretary in an area elementary school. She speaks about the beauty of Mexico, the friendliness of the people, and the things she misses about her country of origin, such as her extended family, the food, and--sometimes--the subtropical climate. But she also lauds the beauty of Boulder, the excellent library system, the cleanliness and orderliness of the city, and the many friends she has made here. After nearly twenty years here, she considers Boulder her home.

Call Number OH1992Date 2014Description Renée Williams' house was unscathed by the flooding of Bear Creek during the Boulder County Flood of 2013 - or so she thought until a day later, after rocks washed down by the flood unseated a manhole cover and blocked the sewage system. For five days her house and some of her neighbors' houses filled with raw sewage. She tells about this experience, how her family and her neighborhood coped with the situation, the difficulties involved in convincing the authorities that there was indeed a sewage problem, and how cleanup was accomplished. She speaks eloquently and movingly about the power of community in crisis situations.

She talks about the geography, climate, and culture of Mexico; the beauty of Boulder and how this city now is her home and a place that she loves; her medical education and her work as a doctor for Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains; and her involvement wtih the Boulder Public Library.
