Tim Fuller, who served on the Boulder City Council from 1972 through 1974, discusses this tumultuous and formative time in Boulder politics. As student protests against the Vietnam War sometimes spilled over into riots in the streets and eighteen-year-olds were able to vote for the first time, the people of Boulder broke with a history of conservative politics and elected a majority of council members who pursued a socially liberal agenda. This agenda included the creation of a Human Rights Commission and the passage of a controversial ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, which was overturned by a vote of the people and led to a recall effort. Fuller discusses these events in detail and with the perspective of thirty-plus intervening years.

JoAnne Foster tells many stories of her and her husband's lives in Boulder. Her husband, Bob Foster, grew up in Boulder in the 1940s. She and Bob both worked for the Boulder Valley School District; Bob mainly as a coach and JoAnne mainly as a counselor. JoAnne describes the consolidation in 1960 of eleven small school districts that today cover Boulder County: the Boulder Valley RE-2 school district and the St. Vrain school district. Although JoAnne talks about working at Platt Junior High and Fairview High School, she talks most in depth about her years at Casey Junior High during the 1970s and 1980s under principal David Zeckser. She describes the great diversity of the school's population and the many approaches that were used to meet the individual needs of students at that time. She also talks about the 1960s and 1970s as a time of social upheaval, in terms of hippie culture and anti-war protests. As a side topic, JoAnne also explains the evolution of the restuarant scene in Boulder, from nearly non-existent before the 1970s when Boulder was a dry town, to the blossoming of it as a foodie mecca once the sale of alcohol was legalized.

Participants included University of Colorado students who identified with hippie culture and/or anti-war sentiment, versus campus and Boulder police officers. The games were seen as a way to address tensions between the two groups. Cliff Chuvarsky was a CU student during the early 1970s and lived in the co-op called Cloud 9. Cliff identified with hippie culture of the time, and he played in the second of Hairy Bacon Bowl games. He talks about the football game, drug use among students, anti-establishment and anti-war attitudes of young people, and student life and politics of the time. He reflects on ways in which anti-establishment attitudes moderated for many of his generation, while at the same time, some of the political values of the 1960s and 1970s continued as part of their value system.

Aaron Clay as an exception in that he played in the last of the three games (1973) just for the fun of the football game rather then out of an ideological identification with either hippie culture or anti-war sentiment. He was the quarterback for the student team. As an undergraduate, Aaron came fron a small town in Colorado; he graduated from CU-Boulder in 1975, then returned to Boulder to go to CU Law School, graduating in 1979. From that dual experience, he is able to paint a picture of the turbulent times of the early '70s and contrast it with the way things had changed by the late '70s - typified by his description of how streaking had replaced political protest on campus.

The games were meant to address tensions between the two groups. Mike Stanwood was a spectator at two of the games, one in 1971 and the other in 1975. He describes the games, the atmosphere surrounding them, and the participants. He also talks about the political and cultural settings in which they were played, which changed markedly from the early 1970s to the mid-1970s as the Vietnam War drew to a close and the intensity of counterculture sentiment began to decrease.

Shep Bryan attended CU Boulder as an undergraduate during the early 1970s. He lived in Boulder during the tumultuous counterculture years of the early 1970s, and he talks about how that culture dovetailed with his own young adult rebellion. During that time, he participated in one of a series of football games that were held during those years that came to be known as The Hairy Bacon Bowl because they matched up young people who were or looked like hippies (hairy) against police officers ("pigs" in the parlance of the time; hence "bacon"). He reflects on what the culture of the time and the Hairy Bacon Bowl meant to him. He also talks about his life after his CU years, including doing a stint in the Merchant Marine, becoming a born-again Christian, his marraige and family, and his work as both a businessman and a man of faith.

Roger Walker, who was a CU student during that time, lived in the co-op called Cloud Nine and played in one of the games along with a number of fellow Cloud Nine residents. He talks about the football game and tells stories about student life and the politics and cultural ideals of the time, including the way opposition to the war in Vietnam and the ideals of hippie culture shaped people's ideas. He reflects on ways in which a technique similar to the Hairy Bacon Bowl games might be used to address current societal problems such as racial tensions.
