This interview is part of a series about a series of football games called the Hairy Bacon Bowl that took place between University of Colorado students with counterculture leanings on the one hand, and campus and city police officers on the other hand, as a way to address those tensions. Bill Robbins, who was a campus police officer from 1968 to 1972, helped organize and played in the first two of these games. He brings the perspective of having been a Vietnam veteran and an older college student, as well as a campus police officer. He describes coming up with the idea for the games due to his desire to improve communications between the student and police groups, what it was like to play in the games, and how he thinks they were successful in their goal. He also talks about being on the police side of anti-war and other protests, hippies in town during that era, the sense of danger he sometimes experienced as a police officer, and his philosphy of how to defuse tense situations.

The games were a way to address tensions between the two groups. Don Marsh was a student who later lived in a co-op known as Cloud Nine. Many of his friends played in the 1971 Hairy Bacon Bowl game. He was a spectator at that game. He describes not only the Hairy Bacon Bowl game of that year, but also life at Cloud Nine, which included the idealism of the counterculture - which was looking for a more open-minded way to live - combined with the hard-partying youth culture of the time. He comments on the Vietnam War and the protests that were held against it. He reflects on societal changes that sprang from that time and have survived as part of American culture; he also reflects on the possibility of using an activity like the Hariy Bacon Bowl to address current community challenges.

The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Stef Ringgenberg played as an offensive lineman in the first of six annual games, playing opposite the then Boulder Chief of Police. Although he doesn't have many specific memories about the game itself, he offers thoughtful discussion of the cultural underpinnings and goals of the hippie movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He also describes a number of anti-war actions that took place at that time. He reflects on the ways that his generation has changed and moved away from the ideals of the 1960s as time has passed.

JoAnne Foster tells many stories of her and her husband's lives in Boulder. Her husband, Bob Foster, grew up in Boulder in the 1940s. She and Bob both worked for the Boulder Valley School District; Bob mainly as a coach and JoAnne mainly as a counselor. JoAnne describes the consolidation in 1960 of eleven small school districts that today cover Boulder County: the Boulder Valley RE-2 school district and the St. Vrain school district. Although JoAnne talks about working at Platt Junior High and Fairview High School, she talks most in depth about her years at Casey Junior High during the 1970s and 1980s under principal David Zeckser. She describes the great diversity of the school's population and the many approaches that were used to meet the individual needs of students at that time. She also talks about the 1960s and 1970s as a time of social upheaval, in terms of hippie culture and anti-war protests. As a side topic, JoAnne also explains the evolution of the restuarant scene in Boulder, from nearly non-existent before the 1970s when Boulder was a dry town, to the blossoming of it as a foodie mecca once the sale of alcohol was legalized.

Sam Kent, who has, by turns, been a magician, DJ, theater and store manager, model train aficionado, and much more, talks about his life in Boulder from 1957 on. The interview covers topics as diverse as Boulder's drive-in and other movie theaters, his family's restaurant ventures, Vietnam War protests, the Halloween Mall Crawl, and the sense of neighborhood in the Boulder of then and now.

Cliff identified with hippie culture of the time, and he played in the second of Hairy Bacon Bowl games. He talks about the football game, drug use among students, anti-establishment and anti-war attitudes of young people, and student life and politics of the time. He reflects on ways in which anti-establishment attitudes moderated for many of his generation, while at the same time, some of the political values of the 1960s and 1970s continued as part of their value system.

He also talks about the political and cultural settings in which they were played, which changed markedly from the early 1970s to the mid-1970s as the Vietnam War drew to a close and the intensity of counterculture sentiment began to decrease.

Tim Fuller, who served on the Boulder City Council from 1972 through 1974, discusses this tumultuous and formative time in Boulder politics. As student protests against the Vietnam War sometimes spilled over into riots in the streets and eighteen-year-olds were able to vote for the first time, the people of Boulder broke with a history of conservative politics and elected a majority of council members who pursued a socially liberal agenda. This agenda included the creation of a Human Rights Commission and the passage of a controversial ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, which was overturned by a vote of the people and led to a recall effort. Fuller discusses these events in detail and with the perspective of thirty-plus intervening years.

Ted Tedesco, city manager of Boulder from 1967 to 1973, looks back with pleasure, humor, insight, and some nostalgia, on his tenure here. He begins by describing his background and early career as a jazz musician, followed by his decision to go to college and change careers. He describes himself as an "activist" city manager and details the role he played in managing issues such as the first approval for an open space tax, the defeat of prohibition laws, and the anti-Vietnam War riots in the late 1960s. He reflects on why he left Boulder and compares working as city manager in Boulder with his experience in San Jose.
