This interview is part of a series about three football games that were played during the early 1970s and were known as the Hairy Bacon Bowl. The teams were made up of counterculture-identified students from the University of Colorado, Boulder, versus campus and city police. Although Jay Jurie did not play in the Hairy Bacon Bowl games, he was a high school and college student during the late 1960s and early 1970, and was involved with the counterculture both in terms of lifestyle and politics. He talks about being a young person in Boulder during that time, including describing places where people hung out together and the social/musical/intellectual and drug culture of that decade, as well as giving a detailed account of anti-war political actions of groups such as Student Mobilization Committee, Student Peace Union, and Students for a Democratic Society. He discusses interactions between student activists and the university administration as well as the police.

Cleo Estrada, a counselor in the multicultural section of Student Services at the University of Colorado at Boulder, was born in 1951 in Center, Colo., in the San Luis Valley. Cleo started working in the fields at age 5-6 with her siblings. She describes how hard the work was and also talks about the use of the Spanish language and traditions in the San Luis Valley. She describes poor housing for Latinos and segregation in Center. She also talks about what motivated her to acquire a college education and how she came to CU-Boulder in 1969 through the Migrant Action Program that recruited and supported Latino students with migrant farming backgrounds, receiving her undergraduate degree in 1973 and her Master's in counseling in 1974. She describes her involvement with UMAS (United Mexican American Students) and Chicano activists on campus. She gives historical background about the Chicano movement, describes special progams for Hispanic students, and lays out the issues the student activists were concerned about and why during the decades of the 1950s to the 1970s. She talks about what had changed on campus since then.
