Dalia was born in 1995 in Brighton, Colorado. Her parents had come to Colorado from Mexico about 14 years before that time. She went to elementary school in Frederick, Colorado, and later to Longmont High School. She describes her elementary years as carefree, but was unhappy in high school because the Mexican/Hispanic and white students self-segragated. Because she was born in this country and thought of herself as American, but was of Hispanic background, she felt that she did not fit with either group. She hypothesizes that teachers often picked white students as their favorites because they participated more in extra-curricular activities where teachers and students interacted informally. At the time of the interview she had just graduated from high school and planned to go to Front Range Community College, and then to either the University of Colorado or the military, eventually hoping to become a coroner and own her own morgue.
