Mary Hey, one of the founders and the former president of the Boulder Sister Cities Program, talks about the mission of the program - to foster greater understanding between American and Soviet people - and the many years of effort that led to Boulder and Dushanbe, Tajikistan, becoming sister cities. She also addresses the controversy that came about when people with the group Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry (BASJ) asked the Sister Cities Program to become involved with their efforts to attain the release of refuseniks from the Soviet Union. Augustine Cordova is retired as a software programmer/engineer at IBM and is also a musician. His family, on both sides, is from New Mexico, but his parents moved to the San Luis Valley in Colorado, where he grew up. He describes the sense of community there, and his respect for his father, who was ready to help anyone. Augustine attended the Univesity of Colorado at Boulder in the 1970s. Among the student movements in which he took part were the Coors boycott, the grape boycott, and the Safeway boycott. He talks about his participation in street theater and musical groups to publicize Chicano issues and describes a song he wrote while a student called "Yo Soy Chicano". Later he describes what happened with the bombing of "Los Seis de Boulder". He recites a song that he wrote about Los Seis de Boulder. He discusses the positive strides made by Latino students who attended CU in the 1970s, Latino presence and culture in Boulder County, the long-term contributions of the Chicano movement of the 1970s, and encourages the younger generation to "pick up the baton" of cementing and continuing gains made by his generation.

This interview is part of a series about three football games that were played during the early 1970s and were known as the Hairy Bacon Bowl. The teams were made up of counterculture-identified students from the University of Colorado, Boulder, versus campus and city police. Although Jay Jurie did not play in the Hairy Bacon Bowl games, he was a high school and college student during the late 1960s and early 1970, and was involved with the counterculture both in terms of lifestyle and politics. He talks about being a young person in Boulder during that time, including describing places where people hung out together and the social/musical/intellectual and drug culture of that decade, as well as giving a detailed account of anti-war political actions of groups such as Student Mobilization Committee, Student Peace Union, and Students for a Democratic Society. He discusses interactions between student activists and the university administration as well as the police.

A dual interview with William Cohen and Mary Hey regarding the inception of Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry as it coincided with the development of the Soviet Sister City Program. After twenty-four years, Cohen and Hey discuss and analyze collisions and misunderstandings between the two groups. Through the context of the ethics of advocacy, they consider the tenuous nature of Cold War interactions with Soviet officials, and how that informed their differing approaches to advocacy. With much laughter and 20/20 hindsight, they discuss what could have been done differently to foster better communication between the groups, what they would not change, and the eventual successes of the individual groups.
