In this wide-ranging interview with Boulder County Commissioner Cindy Domenico, she discusses many issues of current concern for the county commissioners and the people of Boulder County, including the regulation of fracking, open space agriculture and local food production generally; GMO use on open space specifically; roads and road maintenance, wildland fire mitigation; the legalization of marijuana and road safety; and problems of poverty and homelessness.

Richard “Rich” Koopmann, planning manager for Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS), discusses his 40 years with the department. This conversation explores how BCPOS acquired land, the community relationships it built to do so, the intricacies of land preservation and cultural resource management, and Koopmann’s personal stories about being a park ranger and the other roles he has performed within BCPOS. These stories include speaking about people who mentored him, helping members of the public, dealing with members of the public who were violating the law, enforcing hunting regulations, suicides within the park system, the complications of moving the Stroh-Dickens barn, and his involvement in the consultations with Native Americans about Southdown Mountain.

Don Burd is the head of the Buildings and Historic Preservation Department for Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department. He has worked for that department since 1980, and he talks about the department's growth (from 10 to more than 120 employees). He describes many preservation and restoration projects that his crew have undertaken, some of his favorite projects and restoration jobs, and some of the challenges involved in doing historic preservation work. He also talks about working with the Youth Corps program and with other volunteers. He tells about his years of living up at Walker Ranch as a caretaker, his great affection for the property, and his interest in the family that settled it.

Will Toor, an exiting Boulder County commissioner due to term limits, is interviewed about his time from 2004 to 2012 as one of three county commissioners. He talks about the relationship between the City of Boulder and Boulder County and their work on issues including energy, sustainability, human services, land use, open space, and transportation. He discusses the role of scientific research in many of the decisions the commission reached during his time in office. Toor reflects on his biggest achievements on the commission, the effects of the recession on the county, how Boulder County is positioned going forward, and his desire for citizens to be more involved in governmental decisions.
