Evelyn Bullock's family settled in Hygiene to farm, arriving in a covered wagon. She relates family history and stories of her childhood, then moves on to describe her 12 years of teaching at the Montgomery School, a two-room schoolhouse one mile east of Lyons, from 1938 to 1950. Two of her former students, Norma Weese Conaway and Dorothy Dirkes George, join in the conversation to reminisce about teaching and learning in multi-grade classrooms during a time when a teacher made $800 per year, had to remain unmarried, and school was never cancelled for weather, no matter how deep the snow. For years, the three women have met weekly for lunch to share memories. In this interview they discuss a typical school day, special activities, playground games, the coal-fired furnace, lunches, the school baseball team, and walking to school. They also identify classmates in old photographs. Evelyn discusses her family, the family farm near Lyons, her teacher training, applying for her job, discipline of an unruly student, and her janitorial duties at the school.

Carrie Gonzales tells the story of evacuating her mobile home - where she had lived for about 25 years - during the Boulder County Flood of 2013. Her home was one of many that flooded, leaving her and neighbors stranded at the elementary school on what became an island. She tells of the collaborative community feeling among Lyons people, the aid they got from the National Guard and from FEMA, and the long process of digging out and trying to recover their homes, cars, and other possessions. She has emerged from the experience of the flood with increased appreciation for the positive things in life and also has become an advocate for recreating affordable housing in Lyons that would allow people to remain in the community.
