Jamey Ellerbe moved to Boulder in 2000. He talks about changes that have occurred in Boulder since he moved here. He also talks about his life at the Northport Community Apartments, his appreciation of the educational richness of Boulder, his life after a health crisis and his ensuing chronic health problems. He describes the wide-ranging work he did before his health problems began. He discusses his interactions with Boulder Housing Partners in an effort to improve the Northport Community Apartments and with other residents of his building, many who are at-risk. He offers suggestions for improved support of residents and describes how he interacts with others to help them improve their lives. (Note that this interview was held in a place where there were nearby background conversations, especially in the last third of the interview.)

Charissa and Kim Poteet talk about living in the Ponderosa Mobile Home Park in Boulder, financial and regulatory uncertainties due to new ownership of the park by the City of Boulder, the need for affordable housing options in Boulder, and the difficulties of living in Boulder with a modest income. They also talk about their relationship, the work they have done, the reasons that they do enjoy living in Boulder, and ham radio operation.

Jenny LePage discusses the difficulties of finding affordable, safe housing in Boulder. She recounts her experience of living in a poorly maintained and unhealthy rental unit, which contained asbestos and mold, as well as having insect and rodent infestations. She feared that these conditions were impacting her health. When her landlord failed to address these issues, she tried to work with a mediator and learned about the legal aspects of landlord responsibilities, but she was unable to get the landlord to fix the problems. Finally, she decided she had to move out. She talks about her desire to live in a stable situation, where she might be able to own a home and live near her work location, but fears that the housing prices in Boulder make that impossible.

Angela Maria Ortiz Roa talks about living in the Mapleton Mobile Home Park, where Isabel Sanchez, who works with the non-profit organization The GrowHaus, has established permaculture gardens. She details the difficulties involved in qualifying for a mobile home unit, the high interest rates charged for mobile home loans, and other challenges for those who are seeking affordable housing, such as maintenance and energy costs. She also talks about her work with FLOWS (Foundations for Leaders Organizing for Water and Sustainability), and Boulder Food Rescue, and how that work has dovetailed with accessing resources for the mobile home park’s gardens. She talks about being an immigrant and the importance of building community. She talks about the misconceptions people have about low-income communities and the need for those who design programs for affordable and low-income housing to involve members of the targeted communities in the planning.
