This oral history was organized and recorded as part of the “Affordable Housing Residents of Boulder Project,” carried out by Cynthia Torres. Seemanta Seemanta describes how she came to be in Boulder and living at her space in the Mapleton Mobile Home Park after having lived in a number of places in pursuit of affordable housing. Seemanta describes what she likes about Boulder—the outdoor activities, being able to get around easily—and what she enjoys about her home, which is comfortable, provides a good quality of life, and has a diverse, friendly community. She also appreciated her job driving a school bus.

Jenny LePage discusses the difficulties of finding affordable, safe housing in Boulder. She recounts her experience of living in a poorly maintained and unhealthy rental unit, which contained asbestos and mold, as well as having insect and rodent infestations. She feared that these conditions were impacting her health. When her landlord failed to address these issues, she tried to work with a mediator and learned about the legal aspects of landlord responsibilities, but she was unable to get the landlord to fix the problems. Finally, she decided she had to move out. She talks about her desire to live in a stable situation, where she might be able to own a home and live near her work location, but fears that the housing prices in Boulder make that impossible.

Angela Maria Ortiz Roa talks about living in the Mapleton Mobile Home Park, where Isabel Sanchez, who works with the non-profit organization The GrowHaus, has established permaculture gardens. She details the difficulties involved in qualifying for a mobile home unit, the high interest rates charged for mobile home loans, and other challenges for those who are seeking affordable housing, such as maintenance and energy costs. She also talks about her work with FLOWS (Foundations for Leaders Organizing for Water and Sustainability), and Boulder Food Rescue, and how that work has dovetailed with accessing resources for the mobile home park’s gardens. She talks about being an immigrant and the importance of building community. She talks about the misconceptions people have about low-income communities and the need for those who design programs for affordable and low-income housing to involve members of the targeted communities in the planning.

Gene Langlois is a long-time resident of the Mapleton Mobile Home Park, which was purchased by the City of Boulder and leased back to the residents on a 99-year lease. He discusses changes to the mobile home park and to Boulder over time and reflects on the need for affordable housing. He also relates many aspects of his life story, including his early education, his military service, his work as a minister and as an elementary school teacher, his ongoing spiritual journey, and his quest for a healthy, responsible lifestyle.

This interview with Nina Meyers centers around the issue of the increasingly high cost of living in Boulder, particularly for housing. Meyers moved to Boulder in 1975 and has lived in the Vista Village mobile home park since the 1990s. She discusses her experience as a senior citizen dealing with the rising costs of basic necessities such as rent, food, and home repairs. She briefly discusses her employment situation as a home health care provider and playing music for seniors in memory care residences.
