Charlie Brennan, the science and environmental reporter for the Daily Camera newspapaer, describes covering the Boulder County Flood of 2013. He talks about his approach to reporting about the flood, contacts he used to obtain informatiion that would help readers understand what was happening, and the efforts that he and other reporters made in extraordinary circumstances to put together news stories and to get the paper out in spite of the challenges brought about by flood conditions and the complexity of the story. He explains various aspects of the flood, such as what is behind the nomenclature of calling it a 100-year flood or a 1000-year rain. He describes the devastation he observed in Jamestown and praises the efforts of Jamestown mayor Tara Schoedinger and the resiliency of the town's residents. He reflects on the importance of journalism during such an event; on things he would have done differently, with hindsight, including making better use of social media; and on the importance of historical ducments, such as oral histories, in helping journalists to do their work.
