Charlotte Russell Spears' family has been coming from Texas to live in Boulder's Chautauqua neighborhood since its very beginning, when her grandmother stayed in the first Chautauqua tents in 1899. Mrs. Spears describes the various cottages that have been owned by the familuy over the years, mentions other families who owned nearby cottages, and tells of various traditions that have become part of summer life in Chautauqua for her family and others.

Engaged metal pilasters., STYLE : Twentieth Century Commercial., DATE BUILT : ca. 1900, STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Although the facade of this building has been remodeled, certain elements which represent early twentieth century designs may still be seen. These include the stone window sills and lintels on the second story and the kickplates and transoms on the storefront to the right.

Chautauqua has been a Boulder institution since 1898, when the auditorium and dining hall (still in use) were built, a tent city sprang up, and the first educational summer programs were held for Texas teachers and local residents. One of only three major Chautauquas still operating in the United States, the Boulder Chautauqua has survived and thrived as a year-round association with many educational and entertainment offerings, as well as nearly one hundred historic cottages in a spectacular setting. Susan Connelly has been the Executive Director of the Colorado Chautauqua Association since 2003. In this interview she explains Chautauqua's designation as a National Historic Landmark District; and discusses Chautauqua programming and other services offered, the historic Chautauqua cottages, efforts to make Chautauqua environmentally sustainable; and plans for the future.
