Tim Fuller, who served on the Boulder City Council from 1972 through 1974, discusses this tumultuous and formative time in Boulder politics. As student protests against the Vietnam War sometimes spilled over into riots in the streets and eighteen-year-olds were able to vote for the first time, the people of Boulder broke with a history of conservative politics and elected a majority of council members who pursued a socially liberal agenda. This agenda included the creation of a Human Rights Commission and the passage of a controversial ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, which was overturned by a vote of the people and led to a recall effort. Fuller discusses these events in detail and with the perspective of thirty-plus intervening years.

Marvin B. Woolf, a Greeley native and Boulder resident since 1954, has been a Boulder attorney since 1957. He worked for the firm of Newcomer and Douglas, as a water lawyer for the city of Boulder, and in the District Attorney's office. In this interview he tells many stories that bring to life both the small town that was Boulder during the mid-twentieth century and the close-knit legal community of that time.

Participants included University of Colorado students who identified with hippie culture and/or anti-war sentiment, versus campus and Boulder police officers. The games were seen as a way to address tensions between the two groups. David Emigh, who was a student at CU at the time, describes attending the second of the football games as a spectator and also participating in an anti-war march that closed down a roadway.

Cliff identified with hippie culture of the time, and he played in the second of Hairy Bacon Bowl games. He talks about the football game, drug use among students, anti-establishment and anti-war attitudes of young people, and student life and politics of the time. He reflects on ways in which anti-establishment attitudes moderated for many of his generation, while at the same time, some of the political values of the 1960s and 1970s continued as part of their value system.

The teams were made up of university students, many of whom identified with hippie culture and/or anti-war beliefs, on one team, and campus and City of Boulder police officers on the other team. The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Tim Gablehouse is a Boulder native who was a University of Colorado student from 1969 to 1973. While a student he worked for the campus police for two years, from 1971 to 1973. He talks about the difference in policing attitudes between student and non-student campus police staff, as well as the difference between the city and campus police approaches to law enforcement; the way that city, county and campus police cooperated; and the nature of student/campus police relations overall during the 1970s. He played on the police team in the second Hairy Bacon Bowl in 1971, and he describes the good-natured atmosphere of the game. He discusses the way that hippie culture took on a particularly Boulder flavor compared to hippie culture on the coasts and reflects on the laid-back nature of student life during the 1970s. He also talks about the anti-Vietnam-War protests that took place in Boulder during the early 1970s and he touches on the military draft and the way it affected students once the lottery for the draft began.

Charlie Nay was a police officer with the Boulder Police Department from 1966 to 1983 and coached the police Hairy Bacon Bowl team in the first of these games, played in 1970. He believes that the games were helpful in that the familiarity that they created between police and counterculture students engendered friendliness in subsequent encounters. He describes policing during that era, including handling political protests and managing the burgeoning hippie population in Boulder. He also reflects on the evolution of policing and present-day challenges.

Bill Shpall attended CU Boulder as an undergraduate during the early 1970s. As a member of the Program Council board, he became involved with and participated in a series of football games that were held in those years that came to be known as The Hairy Bacon Bowl because they matched up young people who were or looked like hippies (hairy) against police officers ("pigs" in the parlance of the time; hence "bacon"). He talks about what Boulder and the University of Colorado were like during those years, culturally and politically (including unrest after the Kent State killings, hippie transients in town, ROTC, student/police interactions); reflects on the games themselves, which he describes as being tremendously fun but athletically serious; and tells about the direction his life took after those tumultuous years.

From January 1970 to December 1972, Karen Schwartz was a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she earned a degree in music education with a vocal emphasis. She describes Boulder and being a student at the University of Colorado in the early 1970s, including discussion of the topics of hippies in Boulder, Vietnam War protests, the fallout from the Kent State killings in 1970, attitudes toward the police at that time, and usage of marijuana during that era. Although she was not aware of the Hairy Bacon Bowl games while she was living in Boulder, she paints a picture of the backdrop of the place and time during which they occurred.
