This interview is part of a series about three football games known as the Hairy Bacon Bowl, which occurred during the 1970s. Participants included University of Colorado students who indentified with hippie culture and/or anti-war sentiment, versus campus and Boulder police officers. The games were a way to address tensions between the two groups. Don Marsh was a student who later lived in a co-op known as Cloud Nine. Many of his friends played in the 1971 Hairy Bacon Bowl game. He was a spectator at that game. He describes not only the Hairy Bacon Bowl game of that year, but also life at Cloud Nine, which included the idealism of the counterculture - which was looking for a more open-minded way to live - combined with the hard-partying youth culture of the time. He comments on the Vietnam War and the protests that were held against it. He reflects on societal changes that sprang from that time and have survived as part of American culture; he also reflects on the possibility of using an activity like the Hariy Bacon Bowl to address current community challenges.

The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Stef Ringgenberg played as an offensive lineman in the first of six annual games, playing opposite the then Boulder Chief of Police. Although he doesn't have many specific memories about the game itself, he offers thoughtful discussion of the cultural underpinnings and goals of the hippie movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He also describes a number of anti-war actions that took place at that time. He reflects on the ways that his generation has changed and moved away from the ideals of the 1960s as time has passed.

Charlie Nay was a police officer with the Boulder Police Department from 1966 to 1983 and coached the police Hairy Bacon Bowl team in the first of these games, played in 1970. He believes that the games were helpful in that the familiarity that they created between police and counterculture students engendered friendliness in subsequent encounters. He describes policing during that era, including handling political protests and managing the burgeoning hippie population in Boulder. He also reflects on the evolution of policing and present-day challenges.

He played in the Hairy Bacon Bowl just because he thought the game sounded like fun. He remembers the games as being a time that people from both teams came together in a spirit of cooperation and fun. He reflects on how the Hairy Bacon Bowl aided police-community relations long term. Although the original goal of the interview was to discuss the Hairy Bacon Bowl games, much of the interview focuses on his experiences as an African American, first in the south as desegregation was first being implemented in schools in Louisiana, and later as a student at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Beginning in the early 1970s, when there were only about 250 African American students out of 25,000 students at the University of Colorado and ten African American families living in Boulder overall, he experienced the mentorship of various members of Boulder's small, close-knit African American community. He particularly describes the influence of Dr. Joseph Johnson in shaping his life and values, first as a coach in high school and later as a mentor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He reflects on the way CU-Boulder was a place that opened up many opportunities for him and yet also exhibited institutional racism from time to time.

Cliff identified with hippie culture of the time, and he played in the second of Hairy Bacon Bowl games. He talks about the football game, drug use among students, anti-establishment and anti-war attitudes of young people, and student life and politics of the time. He reflects on ways in which anti-establishment attitudes moderated for many of his generation, while at the same time, some of the political values of the 1960s and 1970s continued as part of their value system.

Russ Vanderboom completed part of his undergraduate education at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the early 1970s after having completed two years of college in Wisconsin followed by a year-long stint in the Marine Corps with the Defense Information School. He talks about what it was like to be an older student and a veteran at the university in the early 1970s, a time of much anti-war sentiment in the country. While a student at CU, he played in the fall 1971 Hairy Bacon Bowl, which he describes as good-hearted fun between two groups that previously had experienced a fair amount of tension between them. He talks about various permutations in what it meant to be a hippie—from those with drug involvement on the one hand to those who tried to live according to ideals of “clean living” on the other hand. He later pursued a career that blended cancer research with journalism and public relations for cancer research. He also discusses his novel, The Good Guy List, which was published in 2014.

He attended the University of Colorado and has lived in Boulder or Boulder County thereafter. He was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and has spent many years involved in the music business. This interview only touches briefly on the Hairy Bacon Bowl games, but he is able to paint a detailed picture of life in Boulder at that time. He discusses Prohibition in Boulder, which continued into the late 1960s; his high school years at the original Fairview High School; hippie culture in Boulder, including the influx of hippies into Boulder in 1968 and the STP Family; drug culture at that time; rebellions against uniformity; police enforcement of drug laws; anti-war protests; police-community relations and occasional police violence. He reflects on how The Hairy Bacon Bowl games affected police relations with the younger generation during the 1960s-1970s and speculates on how a similar effort might or might not be effective as a tool to use in today’s society.

From January 1970 to December 1972, Karen Schwartz was a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she earned a degree in music education with a vocal emphasis. She describes Boulder and being a student at the University of Colorado in the early 1970s, including discussion of the topics of hippies in Boulder, Vietnam War protests, the fallout from the Kent State killings in 1970, attitudes toward the police at that time, and usage of marijuana during that era. Although she was not aware of the Hairy Bacon Bowl games while she was living in Boulder, she paints a picture of the backdrop of the place and time during which they occurred.
