Bob Ritzen, the chaplain for Frasier Meadows Retirement Community, describes the severe flooding experienced by Frasier Meadows during the Boulder County Flood of 2013 and the collaborative efforts of staff and residents to evacuate, care for, and resettle the many people whose living quarters were flooded, including residents in assisted living and memory care units. Charlie Brennan, the science and environmental reporter for the Daily Camera newspapaer, describes covering the Boulder County Flood of 2013. He talks about his approach to reporting about the flood, contacts he used to obtain informatiion that would help readers understand what was happening, and the efforts that he and other reporters made in extraordinary circumstances to put together news stories and to get the paper out in spite of the challenges brought about by flood conditions and the complexity of the story. This interview has two narrators: Lt. Col. Mitch Utterback from the Colorado National Guard and Col. Robert Ault, U.S. Army. Utterback is the liaison to all civil authorities in Colorado, especially during a disaster. The National Guard provided aerial and ground search and rescue support to the County Sheriff, and the U.S. Army provided support to the National Guard during the Boulder flood of September 2013. The two men discuss the chain of command in disaster situations, the ability of the military in Colorado to provide support in such situations, and the satisfaction for military personnel of being able to be of service to domestic populations.

Carrie Gonzales tells the story of evacuating her mobile home - where she had lived for about 25 years - during the Boulder County Flood of 2013. Her home was one of many that flooded, leaving her and neighbors stranded at the elementary school on what became an island. She tells of the collaborative community feeling among Lyons people, the aid they got from the National Guard and from FEMA, and the long process of digging out and trying to recover their homes, cars, and other possessions. She has emerged from the experience of the flood with increased appreciation for the positive things in life and also has become an advocate for recreating affordable housing in Lyons that would allow people to remain in the community.

Mark Wischmeyer recalls Wednesday night, September 11, 2013, as a volunteer firefighter in EMS. The river was so deep, Jamestown was cut in half - both bridges were washed out, and all they had were fire radios to communicate. They were trapped for three days, and they kept thinking that the rain was going to stop, but it didn't. He talks about the evacuation, the help coming from all over the country, and how the flood brought neighbors together. He also talks about mold and flood insurance.

Dave Sutherland, interpretive naturalist with Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parks, shares his experience of, and insights into, the September 2013 flood. He describes how the flood affected him and his home, and how various parts of the city and community were impacted, in both physical and personal ways. He describes the process of assessing trail damage, the closure and subsequent repair of trails, and the various ways in which the Boulder community responded. Dave describes how geologic and ecosystem change are inevitable and natural. He discusses consideration of natural processes and reading the clues of the landscape before making decisions to build in an area.

Regina Vigil, a resident of Lyons, talks about her childhood in New York, going to college in Boulder, work with the Peace Corps, and experiences during the September 2013 flood. Her discussion of the flood includes descriptions of the need to evacuate, damage caused by the flood, the three-and-a-half months it took for electricity to be restored in the town, volunteers who helped with flood recovery, the fact that many people have not been able to restore their properties, help from FEMA, and the possibility of a 404 buyout program to remove houses from the flood plain.

David Kimmett describes his experience commuting to and from work by bicycle in Longmont, Colorado, on September 12, 2013, in the midst of the widespread flooding that happened that week. He details the state of creeks, rivers, roads and bridges, both in the morning and evening of that day, as well as the day after. His descriptions include dramatic pictures painted of the extent of the flooding, including minor waterways that turned into large raging rivers, bridges that ordinarily had been 15 feet above the water being wiped out by floods, and the amusing sight of people fishing with nets in the middle of the street as the storm sewers backed up with river water and spewed out water and fish into the air.
