Joel Haertling, the director of the Cinema Program at the Boulder Public LIbrary, discusses his experiences during, and perceptions of, the September 2013 flood. He also discusses previous floods; the need for flood mitigation; his career; his parents, Boulder architect Charles Haertling and piano teacher Viola Brase Haertling; growing up in Boulder; and the contrasts of life in Boulder during his childhood and in 2014.

Crif Crawford and Pete Palmer, residents of the Frasier Meadows retirement community in Boulder, Colorado, present their findings of how and why the flood of September 2013 impacted the retirement community. Their unofficial investigation uncovers some unexpected information about the source of the flooding of Frasier Meadows and other areas that may impact future mitigation efforts. Crawford and Palmer also share personal stories from the experience.

Peg Brown relates her experience of having her and her partner's house flood during the Boulder County Flood of 2013. She describes the flood itself, evacuation from her neighborhood, returning to survey the damage, how she and her family members and friends reclaimed many items and lost many more, her painstaking recovery of photographs and papers damaged in the flood, and the role of FEMA in providing assistance. She speaks movingly about her own emotional reactions to the damage of the flood, the way the neighbors pulled together, and of lessons learned.

Charlie Brennan, the science and environmental reporter for the Daily Camera newspapaer, describes covering the Boulder County Flood of 2013. He talks about his approach to reporting about the flood, contacts he used to obtain informatiion that would help readers understand what was happening, and the efforts that he and other reporters made in extraordinary circumstances to put together news stories and to get the paper out in spite of the challenges brought about by flood conditions and the complexity of the story. He explains various aspects of the flood, such as what is behind the nomenclature of calling it a 100-year flood or a 1000-year rain. He describes the devastation he observed in Jamestown and praises the efforts of Jamestown mayor Tara Schoedinger and the resiliency of the town's residents. He reflects on the importance of journalism during such an event; on things he would have done differently, with hindsight, including making better use of social media; and on the importance of historical ducments, such as oral histories, in helping journalists to do their work.

Tim Head describes the upcoming (at the time of the interview) events for Airport Day 2014 at the Boulder Municipal Airport. At this year's event, in addition to the customary displays of airplanes and helicopters, there will be special recognition for the flood rescue personnel who performed evacuations during the September 2013 Boulder County floods, including those from the Colorado Army National Guard and the U. S. Army, and an opportunity for the aviators to reconnect with the members of the community that were rescued. Tim also describes the World War II Ball, which takes place in the evening, and is a 1940s-themed, USO-type gala.

Larry Sturgeon discusses his work in conducting housing inspections after the Boulder flood of September 2013. He discusses a range of subjects including the declaration of a federal disaster, the role of FEMA in nationally declared disasters, and the elements of an inspection. He details the complete inspection process from efforts to contact those who've applied for assistance to giving examples of what he looks for as he walks through the damaged home. He explains how technology has improved the efficiency of responding to disasters. He talks of the importance of listening to victims stories and of being prepared to respond to urgent needs of victims. He relates stories of experiences he's had working other disasters (Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Charlie). He speaks not only of the devastating effect on disaster victims, but the heartwarming community responses to disasters, and the kind treatment he's received in doing his work.

Paul Aiken, photo editor at the Daily Camera, shares his experiences and observations of the September 2013 flood in Boulder County. He describes the challenges related to traveling in dangerous flood conditions in order to capture photos to publish in the Daily Camera. He discusses some experiences that varioius team members had, especially in trying to reach some of the mountain towns. He offers insights about journalism in general and the photojournalism in particular. He talks about the extent of the flood damage and the resilience of people as they coped with the disaster. Lastly, he tells the stories behind some of the photos published in the book published by the Daily Camera, which is tltled "A Thousand Year Rain: The Historic Flood of 2013 in Boulder and Larimer Counties", and reflects on some of the individuals and families who were greatly affected by the severe flooding.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle talks about some of the events and issues that present challenges for the sheriff's office, including the Flood of 2013 and its aftermath, gun control laws, the use of drones for search and rescue operations, the legalization of marijuana, and the use of alternative sentencing for managing the county jail population.

This interview has two narrators: Lt. Col. Mitch Utterback from the Colorado National Guard and Col. Robert Ault, U.S. Army. Utterback is the liaison to all civil authorities in Colorado, especially during a disaster. The National Guard provided aerial and ground search and rescue support to the County Sheriff, and the U.S. Army provided support to the National Guard during the Boulder flood of September 2013. The two men discuss the chain of command in disaster situations, the ability of the military in Colorado to provide support in such situations, and the satisfaction for military personnel of being able to be of service to domestic populations.

Katie Hanczaryk and Travis Weed talk about the flooding during the September 2013 floods at the Frasier Meadows retirement community, where they are staff members. They describe the flooding and evacuation of residents from the assisted living wing, where the roof caved in due to flooding, and the health care center. They talk about the way residents, staff, management, and volunteers all worked together. They detail and reflect on the ways in which everyone coped with the situation, both during the flood and afterward.

Cathy Rivers moved to Lyons in April, 1998. She is an artist and owns her business called Rivers Colorworks and Design. She is a community-minded person that has contributed her talents to Lyons. After being displaced during the flood of September, 2013 she resettled back into Lyons because it is a place where she belongs. She describes her experience of losing her home and belongings but always finding blessings in so many ways from family, friends, acquaintances and organizations. And she herself has helped the community that needed her and the friends that have helped her.

Interviewees include Tyler Smith, Eric Carlson, Steven Wheeler, and Robert Ault. In this radio program, U. S. Army personnel and crew members of Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters speak of their experience during the Boulder 2013 flood rescue mission during which they evacuated and rescued more than a thousand people and three hundred to four hundred pets. They discuss the gratifcation of using their military skills to aid American citizens on American soil and the challenges of the rescue operation.
