Mark Ruzzin, who was mayor of Boulder from 2004 to 2007, focuses his interview on his years of public service in Boulder, including his initial involvement with neighborhood issues in Boulder, as a member of the city's planning board, a city council member, and finally, mayor. Ruzzin stresses that as mayor, he strove for a collaborative, inclusive process in his relationships with other coucil members, city staff, and the public at large. He recalls passage of the city's Climate Action Plan and the process of using "sustainability filters" as major achievements. He also discusses the Transit Village, Valmont Butte, and the 29th St. Mall.

Ray Joyce is a Boulder native who started and owned some of the first supermarkets in Boulder in the 1950s and served on the Boulder City Council from 1966 to 1969. In this interview he discusses what went into creating and running the successful Joyce's markets, and talks about some of the important achievements of the city council during his tenure, including the creation and funding of the Open Space Program in Boulder, the acquisition of more water rights for the city, and the end of prohibition in Boulder. He also discusses changes between the 1960s and the early twenty-first century in the makeup of the city council and the way meetings are run.

Jim Bowers, former planning director (1966-1967) and city council person (1967-1971) speaks about his time in both of these positiions. This period was marked by riots stemming from opposition to the Vietnam War and changes in the social and political attitudes of many young people, which Bowers recalls. On the other hand, Bowers also recalls his time on city council as having been a relaitvely peaceful and congenial time amongst the council members themselves as well as with the general citizenry and other entitites such as Boulder County, the Federal government and the Boulder Valley School District. One exception he speaks of at length was an episode in which threats were made to the lives of council members over consideration of the removal of the lighted cross and star on Flagstaff Mountain. He also tells about serving on the RTD board of directors for twelve years beginning with the creation of RTD in 1969.

Tim Fuller, who served on the Boulder City Council from 1972 through 1974, discusses this tumultuous and formative time in Boulder politics. As student protests against the Vietnam War sometimes spilled over into riots in the streets and eighteen-year-olds were able to vote for the first time, the people of Boulder broke with a history of conservative politics and elected a majority of council members who pursued a socially liberal agenda. This agenda included the creation of a Human Rights Commission and the passage of a controversial ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, which was overturned by a vote of the people and led to a recall effort. Fuller discusses these events in detail and with the perspective of thirty-plus intervening years.
