In this wide-ranging interview William Arndt discusses many aspects of the history and functioning of the First United Methodist Church of Boulder, especially the church's music programs, architectural history, and sense of community. He describes the upheaval that the congregation experienced over the issue of having gay pastors during the 1970s and its eventual decision to become a "reconciling congregation". He also offers recollections of the social and political upheaval that Boulder experienced during the 1960s. Finally, the interview details his own family history, including memories of his mother, Arlyne Arndt, who also has been interviewed for this program's collection (see OH 1132V A-B).

Richard Hayward has lived in Boulder since 1956. In this interview he describes his early life in Terre Haute, Indiana; his service in the Navy; and his move to Boulder soon after his marriage to Beth Hayward. Active in the First United Methodist Church since his arrival in Boulder, Richard has remodeled, upgraded, spearheaded additions to, and maintained many of the church buildings and the church-owned buildings in the surrounding neighborhood. He details the uses of the various buildings and the work done to improve their safety and usefulness.

Herb Kauvar begins by describing his childhood in Geneva, Ohio, and what brought him to Boulder, Colorado. He was instrumental in starting the first Jewish Sunday school at Hillel in order to provide a Jewish education for his children, and he was one of the founders of Congregation Har HaShem. He also owned The Sink, a favorite college hangout, and Tulagi, a music venue on The Hill that brought acts like Bonnie Rait and Harry Chapin to Boulder in the 1970s. He takes pride in his involvement in Har HaShem and its presence in the community.

Sally Haines first joined what is now the Boulder County Farmers Markets in its early years as a seller of medicinal herbs that she wildcrafted. In the years that followed, she became a board member, the president of the board, and finally, the market manager. In this interview she explores many of the seminal changes that made the market what it is today, including offering new products (such as meats, cheeses, and prepared foods), moving the Wednesday market to the late afternoon and evening, opening the beer and wine garden at the Wednesday market, and joining of the Boulder and Longmont farmers' markets. She also talks about the economics of running the market and some of the governance issues that have been part of the Boulder market's growth.

Charlotte Russell Spears' family has been coming from Texas to live in Boulder's Chautauqua neighborhood since its very beginning, when her grandmother stayed in the first Chautauqua tents in 1899. Mrs. Spears describes the various cottages that have been owned by the familuy over the years, mentions other families who owned nearby cottages, and tells of various traditions that have become part of summer life in Chautauqua for her family and others.

Gerard Brunetti talks about his lifestyle and living situation as a vagabond musician and inventor. He explains the distinction that he makes between being a vagabond and being homeless. He describes hitchhiking across country, talks about Charles Mingus as an influence in his life, and refers to his inventions of musical instruments and a new method of musical notation. He also discusses his thoughts about how societal norms and changes (such as de-institutionalizing the mentally ill) have affected the homeless population in this country, and he describes some possible models for providing housing for homeless people, such as portable tiny houses and using otherwise unused motels as housing

This recording is of a celebration marking the conclusion of the Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry (BASJ), which was created in 1987 to provide advocacy and resettlement support for Jews who were facing increasing anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union. The ceremony honors the founder, Bill Cohen, as well as the other critical participants in BASJ - the administrators, members of the board, and the volunteers. Moderator and BASJ pioneer, Roxanne Bailin, describes the accomplishments of the project, while Bill Cohen elaborates on its history and mission. He remarks that BASJ was one of the most successful resettlement efforts in the United States. Other speakers and honorees include the mayor of Boulder, the Allied Jewish Federation and local rabbis, as well as members of the New American community (resettled Soviet Jewish immigrants). After the recognition ceremony, two choruses sing and present skits about the process of emigrating and then integrating into the new community. The event concludes with a description of a successor group founded by the Russian Jewish community, the New American Organization.

Patricia Marshall talks about her upbringing in Kansas and her relationship with her grandfather, Elmer Frasier, who bought property on South Boulder Road from the Avery Dairy, and bought and developed the Frasier Meadows property. She lived on the Marshall property from 1982 to 1997, and describes the property in detail, including buildings, ditches, and wildlife. Sixty acres of this property later was sold to City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks to become part of Marshall Mesa Open Space.

Jason Romero was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado. He attended Pueblo Community College while in high school, graduating with an associate's degree in 2010. He then went to the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he graduated in 2013, summa cum laude. At the time of this interview he was about to start a graduate program in educaton. In his interview he discussses his educational experiences, "low rider" vehicles as a cultural phenomenon, the development of his identity as a Chicano, the importance of Latino student organizations while he was at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and harassment by the police based on his ethnic identity.
