Bob Matheson describes his house and the land on which he lives in the Marshll area, beginning with a discussion of the many coal mines in the area, the coal mine fires that continue to burn underground, a silver and gold mill that once operated in the area, and the longwall coal mining technique that was attempted at the Fox Patterson Mine. He describes the design and building of his house, outbuildings and well, including the original house concept, which was designed by architect Charles Haertling. He also talks about wildlife in the area, the old Marshall School, and his conservation easement with the Open Space Department.
