This envelope contains photographs, ca. 1904-1920, which Maude Wylam acquired during her years of employment with the Colorado Telephone Company.

ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Flat roof. Assessor's records indicate that this is a stone building, now covered with new face brick and stucco siding. The facade has been totally remodeled. The building originally had a stepped front; cloth awnings; and large display windows. New windows and doors. 1124 13th has new red face brick; 1128 13th is board and batten and stucco. Two recessed entrances; remodeled., STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This commercial building is significant for its location on the "Hill," an historic business district. However, the building has been extensively remodeled and has little historic integrity., DATE BUILT: 1939., STYLE: Twentieth Century Commercial.

The building to the west has a slight false front with brickwork cornice, segmental arched windows with 6/1 lights, and a center front double door. The building to the east is slightly taller and has a stepped parapet roof, a single entrance door, and display windows., STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This building, which was originally and still a machine shop in 1988, lends diversity to the downtwon historc district through its association with that trade., DATE BUILT: [ca. 1900]., STYLE: Twentieth Century Commercial.

Alfred Howe, referred to as Bart in this interview, talks about his life in Boulder County and his career at IBM and StorageTek. Originally from Oklahoma, he and his wife Mary moved to the Boulder area in 1970, drawn in part by their love of the outdoors. He mentions some of the changes that he has witnessed over the 45 years that he's lived in the area, such as population growth and changes in the sports programs at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He praises the area's excellent school system and says that he enjoys the cultural entertainment opportunities in a university town. He discusses the inner workings of IBM and StorageTek, comparing them as companies and discussing the tension between the two companies initially until competition decreased as they began moving in different directions. He reflects on the Vietnam War and discusses how and why his ideas about that war changed over time. He speculates that the future will bring issues around water scarcity and fracking to Colorado.
