Rita Derjue, a renowned artist, describes her art education - which took her to many countries in Europe and to Mexico - and names artists who were influential in her development. After moving to Colorado with her husbanc, Carle Zimmerman, she drew inspiration from mountain hiking. Much of the interview has her explaining her artist-in-residence experience over roughly five months at Whittier School in Boulder. She details how the program worked and tells specific stories about working with the children, including vivid explanations of how she taught students to see what they wanted to draw and how to draw architecture realistically. She talks about her increased involvement with issues of the environment and her work for historic preservation; she speaks of health challenges that have come with age and have impacted her work; and she reflects on the challenges of being a female artist and how respect for female artists has grown over the years. Throughout the interview, Ms. Derjue explains the importance of art to the individual, the community, and especially children.
