This interview is part of a series about three football games known as the Hairy Bacon Bowl, which occurred during the early 1970s. David Emigh, who was a student at CU at the time, describes attending the second of the football games as a spectator and also participating in an anti-war march that closed down a roadway.

The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Stef Ringgenberg played as an offensive lineman in the first of six annual games, playing opposite the then Boulder Chief of Police. Although he doesn't have many specific memories about the game itself, he offers thoughtful discussion of the cultural underpinnings and goals of the hippie movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He also describes a number of anti-war actions that took place at that time. He reflects on the ways that his generation has changed and moved away from the ideals of the 1960s as time has passed.

The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Daryl Varnado played on the police team because of his job, during his student days, in security at the UMC. He played in the Hairy Bacon Bowl just because he thought the game sounded like fun. He remembers the games as being a time that people from both teams came together in a spirit of cooperation and fun. He reflects on how the Hairy Bacon Bowl aided police-community relations long term. Although the original goal of the interview was to discuss the Hairy Bacon Bowl games, much of the interview focuses on his experiences as an African American, first in the south as desegregation was first being implemented in schools in Louisiana, and later as a student at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Beginning in the early 1970s, when there were only about 250 African American students out of 25,000 students at the University of Colorado and ten African American families living in Boulder overall, he experienced the mentorship of various members of Boulder's small, close-knit African American community. He particularly describes the influence of Dr. Joseph Johnson in shaping his life and values, first as a coach in high school and later as a mentor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He reflects on the way CU-Boulder was a place that opened up many opportunities for him and yet also exhibited institutional racism from time to time.

The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Phil Battany played in the 1972 Hairy Bacon Bowl game on the police team as a member of the City of Boulder police. He says that, while the games were cordial, the students involved were not the hardcore hippies that were responsible for most of the police/hippie tensions. He talks extensively about policing in that era and about dealing with the small subset of counterculture young people who were entrenched in a drug and sometimes violence-based culture, such as the STP Family. He discusses the difference between the small-town, personal and flexible policing atmosphere that he experienced in pre-1970s Boulder and contrasts that to the stricter, "us versus them," policing that came into play in the 1970s and beyond. He expresses support for anti-Vietnam War sentiments, but not for some of the protest tactics. He delves into racial politics and police and sheriff department politics of the 1970s and 1980s.

This folder contains the particularly detailed and informative diary of a Boulder businessman, covering the period of 22 May 1891 to 1 June 1901. J. B. Hiskey writes of his family life, the weather, local deaths, local, regional and national news, and his work in the grocery trade, in railroad construction, coal shipment, and other daily events that came to his notice. The ledger-size diary contains numerous newspaper clippings, some loosely filed in the volume., Notable occurrences that Hiskey mentions are his first shipments of coal in Feb. 1893, Denver bank failures and the fall in silver prices in July 1893, the Boulder Creek flood in May 1894 (with many clippings), the Daily Camera office fire on 18 Jan. 1895, laying of the Masonic Temple cornerstone in Boulder on 19 March 1895, first operation of Boulder's electric streetcar railroad on 24 June 1899, and his purchase of a horse on 29 June 1899 which had a disguised blemish., The pages of the diary are numbered. Three commemorative U. S. postage stamps issued for the World's Columbian Exposition are attached to page 61 (February 1893).

This interview is part of a series about the culture of protest during the 1960s-1070s in Boulder County. The interviews particularly examine football games called the Hairy Bacon Bowl that took place between radicalized students and hippies on the one hand, and police officers on the other hand, as a way to address those tensions between those two groups. Fred Gerhardt's father, a Boulder police officer, played in these games. Around that time Fred was in the police cadet program as a high school student and later fought in Vietnam. Since 1979 he has been a member of the Boulder police force. He describes hippie culture of the '60s and '70s, anti-war protests in Boulder, and anti-police sentiment at the time. He also reflects on local changes in law enforecement practice over the years, which he believes have reduced the previously high number of high-speed pursuits and violent interventions by police, compared to the "community policing" policies that he sees being in effect today.
