"This study is an experiment in that it takes a year, selected more or less arbitrarily, and attempts to determine the general situation, from an examination of the documents dealing with that year and from interviews with persons familiar with Boulder in that year; it attempts also to compare, after the passage of more than fifty years, the values of records with the memories of people who knew the town in that year, and have remained through the changing scenes.

Ariana Strangelove talks about being a person who is both homeless and transgender. She details both the attractions and challenges of living without a home. She also comments on the strengths of services in Boulder for people who are homeless and some of the ways that programs don't fully address the needs of this part of the population. She explains ways in which society finds it hard to classify and meet the needs of transgender people and talks about the difficulties she has encountered, ranging from violence against transsexuals to an inability to consistently afford the needed hormone medications, to ambivalence on the part of others about transsexual use of facilities such as shelter dorms and bathrooms. She also talks about her long-term passion for and involvement in the software development and Internet coummunities and how these relate to her values of promoting sharing, equality, and social justice.
