This interview is part of a series about a series of football games called the Hairy Bacon Bowl that took place between University of Colorado students with counterculture leanings on the one hand, and campus and city police officers on the other hand, as a way to address those tensions. Bill Robbins, who was a campus police officer from 1968 to 1972, helped organize and played in the first two of these games. He brings the perspective of having been a Vietnam veteran and an older college student, as well as a campus police officer. He describes coming up with the idea for the games due to his desire to improve communications between the student and police groups, what it was like to play in the games, and how he thinks they were successful in their goal. He also talks about being on the police side of anti-war and other protests, hippies in town during that era, the sense of danger he sometimes experienced as a police officer, and his philosphy of how to defuse tense situations.

The games were a way to address tensions between the two groups. Don Marsh was a student who later lived in a co-op known as Cloud Nine. Many of his friends played in the 1971 Hairy Bacon Bowl game. He was a spectator at that game. He describes not only the Hairy Bacon Bowl game of that year, but also life at Cloud Nine, which included the idealism of the counterculture - which was looking for a more open-minded way to live - combined with the hard-partying youth culture of the time. He comments on the Vietnam War and the protests that were held against it. He reflects on societal changes that sprang from that time and have survived as part of American culture; he also reflects on the possibility of using an activity like the Hariy Bacon Bowl to address current community challenges.

This interview is part of a series about the Hairy Bacon Bowl, football games played at the University of Colorado’s Folsom Field in the 1970s. The teams were comprised of counterculture students, on the one hand, and police officers, on the other hand, as a way to address tensions between the two groups. Geoff Sparks’ father Eugene Sparks, a Boulder police officer, played in some of these games. Geoff attended two of the games in early adolescence. He describes his father’s unconventional approach to policing, which featured a lot of empathy for and direct, positive interaction with the hippie population in Boulder. His approach to policing grew out of his exploration of New Age spiritual practices of the 1960s. In contrast, Eugene Sparks also was head of the police riot squad; Geoff talks about the riots that happened in Boulder during the 1960s and ‘70s, his father’s role as a police officer at that time, and some of the challenges of police work. He also describes the first of the Hairy Bacon Bowl games in terms of interactions between the two teams and his experience of the game as a spectator. He also reflects on the changes in Boulder’s culture from the 1960s/1970s compared to 2015.

The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Stef Ringgenberg played as an offensive lineman in the first of six annual games, playing opposite the then Boulder Chief of Police. Although he doesn't have many specific memories about the game itself, he offers thoughtful discussion of the cultural underpinnings and goals of the hippie movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He also describes a number of anti-war actions that took place at that time. He reflects on the ways that his generation has changed and moved away from the ideals of the 1960s as time has passed.

Charlie Nay was a police officer with the Boulder Police Department from 1966 to 1983 and coached the police Hairy Bacon Bowl team in the first of these games, played in 1970. He believes that the games were helpful in that the familiarity that they created between police and counterculture students engendered friendliness in subsequent encounters. He describes policing during that era, including handling political protests and managing the burgeoning hippie population in Boulder. He also reflects on the evolution of policing and present-day challenges.

The goal was to ameliorate tensions between the two groups. Daryl Varnado played on the police team because of his job, during his student days, in security at the UMC. He played in the Hairy Bacon Bowl just because he thought the game sounded like fun. He remembers the games as being a time that people from both teams came together in a spirit of cooperation and fun. He reflects on how the Hairy Bacon Bowl aided police-community relations long term. Although the original goal of the interview was to discuss the Hairy Bacon Bowl games, much of the interview focuses on his experiences as an African American, first in the south as desegregation was first being implemented in schools in Louisiana, and later as a student at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Beginning in the early 1970s, when there were only about 250 African American students out of 25,000 students at the University of Colorado and ten African American families living in Boulder overall, he experienced the mentorship of various members of Boulder's small, close-knit African American community. He particularly describes the influence of Dr. Joseph Johnson in shaping his life and values, first as a coach in high school and later as a mentor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He reflects on the way CU-Boulder was a place that opened up many opportunities for him and yet also exhibited institutional racism from time to time.
