Alla Levy, with her husband and two sons, was the first of the families from Dushanbe, Tajikistan, to be resettled in the United States by Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry. She recalls the highs and lows of their life in the Soviet Union where she and her husband, both well-educated and economically stable, experienced increasing discrimination against Jews. She began to realize that for their sons, educational and economic opportunities would be limited. The family began to try to find ways to obtain visas to leave, and she talks about their experiences in the context of the ongoing political events in the world. She also discusses the experiences of family members and other Jews from Dushanbe during and after World War II, at home, at the front and in concentration camps. With help from BASJ her family arrived in the United States. She details the familiy's initial difficulties in finding a place for themselves here, their adjustments to new careers, new friends, interactions with government agencies, new cultural expectations, and finally, being able to participate openly in Judaism. She talks about how the BASJ helped in supporting their efforts through this difficult, but ultimately triumphant, process. In her words, "This is my home now, and I consider myself American".

Mikhail Fridman emigrated from the Soviet Union to Boulder in 1992. In this interview he talks about government discrimination against Jewish people in the Soviet Union and the process of emigration. He compares life in Boulder to life in the Soviet Union, including discussion of housing, general culture and religion. He also describes adjusting to life in the United States, the role that Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry (BASJ) played in his resettlement, and becoming a United States citizen.

Esfira "Essa" Kalendareva discusses her family's emigration from the former Soviet Union to Boulder, Colorado. She talks about the oppression of the Jewish community in Russia and the privations of life in the former Soviet Union and how those things impacted her decision to leave the country. Essa describes her experience as a new immigrant in Boulder. She talks about the help she received from Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry and many other people. Essa describes the change for her family of living openly in terms of religion and celebrating their Judaism in America. She describes the jobs she has had in Boulder, and reflects joyously on her love of life in America and in Boulder.

Gal Beckerman is the author of the award-winning book, "When They Come for Us, We'll Be Gone," a history of the American Jewish movement to obtain the release of Soviet Jewish refuseniks from the 1960s to the 1980s. On March 14, 2011, he spoke about his book at the University of Colorado-Boulder in an event sponsored by the CU Jewish Studies Program and the Maria Rogers Oral History Program. In this recording of that talk he speaks about the process of researching and writing the book, the plight of the refuseniks, the cultural politics behind the involvement of American Jews in the situation, and Cold War politics that resulted in pressure on the Soviets to allow emigration. The discussion also touches on the efforts of Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry and the resettlement work done in Boulder with those who immigrated here.

Victor and Lydia Slonim emigrated from the Soviet Union to Boulder, Colorado, in 1989. Victor, who is Jewish, describes many aspects of antisemitism in the former Soviet Union, as well as harsh treatment of dissidents there. Lydia, whose family of origin was not Jewish, describes employment and personal discrimination she experienced in the Soviet Union as a result of marrying someone who is Jewish. They both compare Soviet and American culture and describe adjustment to life in the United States, including the role of Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry in helping them to learn English and learn about life in America.

Painter Olga Plam emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States with her husband and son in 1977, after three years of trying to obtain an exit visa. She vividly describes the persecution experienced by Jews in the Soviet Union, which banned religious observance and did not consider Jews to be Russians, a persecution that increased in intensity for those who were trying to leave. She describes the resettlement process in the United States, including four years spent living at the Mountain Research Station, learning English and about American culture through the kindness of new American friends, and how she went about regaining a sense of Jewish tradition. She also relates the personal and political efforts made by herself and others in the United States to obtain an exit visa for her father, Naum Meiman, a prominent mathematician - a process that took 13 years.
