Mark Welker is a mechanical engineer who began working for International Business Machines (IBM) at the IBM Space Guidance Center in Owego, New York, in 1963. He transferred to IBM's new site in Boulder in 1966, worked in the tape drive and printer divisions, and held various positions in engineering, product management, business services, and market intelligence over the course of his 43-year career at IBM. He discusses changes at IBM over four decades, including women in engineering and alcohol policies in the workplace; mentions other high-tech companies in Boulder and Denver; and talks about the impact of IBM on the community. He briefly describes social life and family life in Boulder, plus the elements that make Boulder a desirable place to live, from the 1960s-1990s.

Beau Rezendes was one of the founders of Boulder Hospice [Beau Bohart when founding Hospice]. She helped shepherd it through changing notions of its place in the community. She discusses educating physicians and community members in order to build support for hospice, explaining how regulations and funding might affect hospice, and the place hospice holds in the natural cycle of life. She also describes work to help create other hospices across Colorado and nationally and to secure insurance reimbursement as a source of hospice funding. She describes her marriage to and professional partnership with Dennis Rezendes. She recounts the changes in the organization that started as Boulder Hospice; went through a series of name, program and location changes; and now is called TRU Hospice. She speculates about possible future changes in the hospice movement. And finally, she reflects on what has been most meaningful throughout her life.

This interview is part of a series focusing on the history of apples in Boulder County. Two cousins share oral traditions and personal recollections pertaining to a Boulder-area ranch that their family has owned for five generations. Cherry Moore provides historical and genealogical information concerning the migration of the Pruden, Barber, and Ruby families—early Boulder residents—from Iowa and Illinois to Colorado during the second half of the nineteenth century. Cherry also discusses the lives of Jennie and Charles Pruden, the first members of the family to take possession of the ranch. Using information from Jennie Pruden’s diary, Cherry describes the origins of the apple orchard on the property, which Jennie and Charles Pruden planted during the 1890s. She also reconstructs life on the property around the turn of the twentieth century. Charlie Robinson, who spent much of his childhood living on the ranch, shares memories of his mid-twentieth-century upbringing. Charlie explains the processes by which his family produced apple cider and other agricultural products. He also talks about butchering hogs, trapping animals, and fishing in the South Boulder Creek. Both narrators stress the importance of family and community ties. Many of their recollections are of Sunday dinners and other family gatherings.
