Description

Steve Waltman, who has lived in the town of Sunshine since 1990, has worked as a volunteer firefighter as well as having served on the Sunshine Fire Department's Board of Directors and as both Assistant Chief and Chief of the department. In this interview he describes many aspects of the Fourmile Canyon Fire of 2010 from both the perspective of a resident and a firefighter. Included are discussion of firefighting techniques, safety measures, tales of structures that burned or were saved, the affect of wind on the fire, the aftermath of the fire, and reflections about the sense of community and responsibility of a firefighter working in his own home district.
