In 1947, LeRoy and Alice Holubar began a mountaineering equipment business that gradually specialized in light, custom-designed equipment for back-packers and rock climbers. Among the items they developed were down-filled sleeping bags with an inner baffle system that eliminated stitched-through seams which cause cold spots. The business was sold in 1968, and was subsequently located at 1975 30th Street and 672 South Broadway. It is now part of The North Face.
In 1966, Gerry Mountain Sports was located at 821 Pearl Street. Their catalogs specialized in custom-designed equipment for mountaineers, hikers, hunters and campers. Their catalogs included sleeping bags, outdoor clothing, tents, backpacks, boots, and camping equipment. A blurb from their 1968 catalog reads: "Colorado Outdoor Sports Corporation was founded in 1946 as Gerry Mountain Sports, the realization of Gerry Cunningham's war-time dream to fill a void in the design and manufacture of high-quality, lightweight outdoor and climbing equipment. The Company's pioneering contributions to ultralight gear were recognized in 1953 when prototypes of the Gerry Himalayan Tent went with the British on their successful Everest expedition. And the second prototype was proved-out that year on the American K-2 expedition...as were our parkas, wind pants, packboards and sacks." "Other highlights over the years included designing survival kits for the Air Force, and outfitting the American Everest climb in 1963. Then in 1966 our Company was reorganized as Colorado Outdoor Sports Corporation with Richard H. Olson, president, contributing the scientific management skills he had learned as a top executive with the Sundstrand Corporation. This reorganization brought together two men determined to lead Colorado Outdoor Sports to an unrivaled position as America's leading innovator and supplier of high-quality, ultrlight outdoor gear. The results, to date, are the products of this catalog."
In 1973, Mountain Sports was located at 821 Pearl Street. A blurb from their 1973 catalog reads: "We're a small shop in Boulder Colorado: and we all love the outdoors - especially the mountains. The shop is a fun friendly place - filled with the items you see in this catalogue. We have a good time sharing outdoor adventures with our customers. But we're very serious about our products, working to protect the quality and service of Mountain Sports. The owner of Mountain Sports, Bob Swartz, was once Vice-President of Gerry Outdoor Sports, and began in outdoor equipment with Gerry when they first started design and construction of quality camping equipment in 1942. His interest and participation in outdoor sports naturally evolved into the ownership of his own shop. His fundamental knowledge of quality and design resulted in continual improvement in products. We're a small shop, and we hope to keep it that way - so we can determine our own policies and maintain our personal approach. Even our catalogue was a team effort - photographs were taken by one of our girls, Nonie Werbe; another Mountain Sports employee, Heide Sullivan, did the original layout; and shop manager Anne Whitbeck had to worry about all the words and photos and desciptions and everything else. But we had a good time doing it, and we hope it's been an informative helpful booklet, - telling you what's available at Mountain Sports, and what we're about at Mountain Sports...If you're ever in Boulder, come by...we'd really like to see you." Mountain Sports had a custom sewing and repair shop that provided sewing repair and custom sewing of packs, clothing, sleeping bags and tents. They also sold climbing equipment and prepackaged food for campers.
In 1972, Carikit was a Boulder based do-it-yourself kit manufacturer by mail order only. They sold kits to make sleeping bags, tents, jackets and smaller outerwear. In the 1972-73 catalog, Holubar Mountaineering, Ltd., was selling Carikit products.
