History: This oral history collection began in 1976 as a project, facilitated by grant money from the Bicentennial Celebration Committee. The collection continues to grow and, since 1984, has been coordinated by the Carnegie Library for Local History. Volunteers conduct the interviews. The interviewees mostly are long-time residents, discussing a variety of topics covering local history.

Description In this interview, conducted by fourth-grade students from the Whittier Student Historians' Club, Darleen Moore Del Pizzo describes going to kindergarten at Whittier Elementary School in 1940, when her teacher was Dorothy Anderson, whom she describes as one of the kindest teachers she ever had. She describes the Whittier building at the time she was a student and other aspects of going to school there, such as favorite activities and a best friend whom she still knows.

Description Judith Williams (then Judith Estey) was a kindergarten student at Whittier Elementary School in Boulder in 1944. She later returned to the school as a first-grade teacher. In this interview with members of the Whittier History Club she tells about her kindergarten year, including anecdotes about the school personnel, friends, learning to read, music, recess, other school activities, and clothes worn at that time. She also tells a story about finding her kindergarten teacher's desk many years later, when she returned as a teacher.

Description Bill Nagel talks about the experience of helping a Soviet Jewish immigrant family to resettle in the Boulder area in the early 1990s through Boulder Action for Soviet Jewry, and the deep friendship that sprung up between the two families. Among the topics touched on are Bukharan Jewish culture, successful adjustments to and appreciation of American life, the importance of encouraging self-sufficiency for immigrant families, and the ways in which immigrants enrich American culture.
