Description

This collection contains documents related to Jane Barker's work as a writer including her columns for the Boulder Daily Camera, research for articles, and materials related to her book "76 Historic Homes of Boulder, Colorado." There are also architectural drawings and blueprints for Valentine family homes and additional materials on homes and structures around Boulder County and miscellaneous topics.

Box 1 (1991 donations) - See 782-1-1 and 782-1-2.
Box 1 cont. (2015 donations) - In 1974, the Camera asked Jane Barker to do a story about "Natives in Boulder" to be published in the 1975 Outlook supplement. She asked people to respond to a survey. Those submissions by natives, oldtimers and newcomers have been separated into five folders based on length of residency. Additional folders contain documents pertaining to Boulder homes, the Colorado Chautauqua, Foot of the Mountain Cottages (200 Arapahoe Avenue), Kappa Kappa Gamma House (1134 University Avenue), Wittemeyer log ranch home in Sunshine, Logan Mill house in Fourmile Canyon, Gillaspie house in Nederland, Kilker farm on Dillon Road, a very few items on Longmont houses, article on the Public Service Co. preserving Valmont Cemetery, and the July 1979 issue (112 pages) of "Where to Live in Boulder County" which contains photographs, description and price of new and old homes for sale (nearly all under $200,000.00).

Folder in Steel Case 2 - (1) Galley proof sheets for "76 Historic Homes of Boulder, Colorado." (2) Architectural drawing for alterations to the John B. Valentine house at 720 13th street, done by architect James Hunter. (3) Seven sheets of blueprints for a house designed by Glen Huntington and built for J. W. Valentine at 940 Euclid in 1927. (4) Blueprints for alterations and an addition to a house designed by Glen Huntington and built for J. W. Valentine at 940 Euclid in 1935.

History

Jane Barker is the daughter of John B. Valentine, the granddaughter of E. Francis Beckwith, and the great-granddaughter of Elmer F. Beckwith.

Description Copy of a handwritten note, the text of which reads: "Longmont's first newspaper, vol 1, no. 1, Longmont Sentinel, dated June 24, 1871 - Hall and Law editors and proprietors. After 3 or 4 issues the plant was bought by Elmer F. Beckwith who changed its name to Longmont Press, which first issue was dated Nov. 7, 1871. Vol. 1, no. 1 of the Sentinel is now in the Longmont Museum. [Signed] Francis Beckwith, son of Elmer F. Beckwith."
