History

Lawrence Ralph Allen was the grandson of Alonzo Nelson Allen, early settler of the Longmont area. Alonzo N. Allen came to the area in 1859 from Wisconsin, soon bringing his wife Mary Ann Harris Dickens Allen and children. He built a cabin southwest of Taylor Mountain (1.5 miles east of what would become Allenspark) where he ran cattle and prospected for gold. In addition to being a founding father of Allenspark and the town's namesake, Alonzo N. was a prominent early resident of the Longmont area, and his wife Mary Ann ran a hotel and boarding house in Burlington (one of the first settlements in the area prior to Longmont's formation).
Alonzo Harris Allen (Alonzo N. and Mary Ann's son) lived all but a few years of his life in the Longmont area and was a cowboy, stagecoach driver, and the father of twelve children, including Lawrence Ralph Allen, with his wife Margaret A. Ross Allen. The Donor of this collection, Jack Lowery is the grandson of Lawrence and Margaret Allen.
