Boulder's State Preparatory School was built in 1895 at 1720 Pearl Street. A large building, it filled the eastern two-thirds of the block. A brief ground-breaking ceremony for the new Boulder High School at 1604 Arapahoe Avenue was held on 12 December 1935, and the school was dedicated on 11 November 1937. The last classes held in the Prep School were in 1937, and the building was demolished in 1939. In 1941, a Safeway supermarket was built on the west end of the block, and the Benson Lumber Company building was built on the east end in 1947. In 2016, the old school site is home to Frasca Restaurant, Pizzeria Locale, and the Berg Hill Greenleaf & Ruscitti law offices.
