Description

Two huge scrapbooks of a university student's printed materials.

Summary

356-O-1 and 356-O-2 (oversize boxes) contain two very large scrapbooks.
Box 3 - printed materials and letters that formerly were loosely contained in Jackson's scrapbook no. 3, from the period 1905-1906. Folder 1, however, contains letters that Jackson's ancestors wrote in 1863 and 1884.
Telegrams, photographs, postcards, letters, lithographs, and other printed materials are included.

History

Born at West Chester, PA., on 12 June 1883, Thomas Hoopes Jackson entered the Denver Manual Training High School in 1898, where he was a leader in school activities. He entered the University of Colorado in 1900, and was active with the Athletic Association, Debating Club, Silver and Gold publication, Y.M.C.A., Literary Society, Oaxoaca Club, Oratorical Assn., baseball team, etc. He was a charter member of the Gamma Kappa chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Jackson, a Univ. of Colo. student from West Chester, PA., compiled these between Sept. 1900 and March 1906, while he was a member of the Gamma Kappa chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity. The materials relate to his education at C.U. Boulder, and to his activities in many campus organizations.
Jackson received his B.A. degree from the Univ. of Colorado on 8 June 1904, and was president of the freshman law class in 1904-1905. He continued to be active in oratorical, fraternity, university student weekly, Y.M.C.A., baseball and other associations at the University while he was a student there.

Description The two letters in this folder were loose in one of the Thomas H. Jackson, Jr., scrapbooks. In the letter dated 8 Feb. 1863, Lucy Price of West Chester, Penn., wrote to her father, describing a whaling tableaux panorama of a Captain William which she had just seen; she noted that this was the longest letter she had ever written., The letter dated 20 Jan. 1884 is from the mother of 7 month old Thomas H. Jackson, Jr., to the infant's great uncle, Dr. Pusey Heald, of Wilmington, Del. She wrote it as if it were in the baby's words. The letter contains family news.
