History of the Civil Conservation Corps in Boulder, Colorado
The Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) was a governmental organization created in 1933 during the Great Depression. The function of the CCC was to do public works projects all over the United States while providing men with good paying jobs. The projects ranged from building roads, clearing forest of dead growth, erosion prevention projects, etc. The program recruited men from the ages of 17-23 who were in particular financial need. They were paid a monthly salary of $30, most of which was required to be sent to family members at home. The CCC provided housing and meals to the men in exchange for their labor.
When most people think of the CCC they envision construction projects and hard labor, but it wasn{u2019}t all work for the men. What many people do not realize is that each camp where the young men lived was a thriving community in itself. In Boulder, Colorado there were two such camps. One was located at the intersection of 6th and Water (Canyon), the other at the intersection of 6th and Baseline. The men of the camps were an integral part of the Boulder community during their stay there. They provided the community with entertainment through orchestra concerts and plays. The community also provided for the them; many men took advantage of low to no cost tuition at local high schools and the University of Colorado.
The men of camps SP-2-C (6th and Water) and SP-5-C (6th and Baseline) were from the 802 and 809 CCC companies. Both companies spent time at each camp while working on projects in the Boulder area. The main projects completed were the Sunrise Circle Amphitheater and public meeting structure on Flagstaff Mountain, Flagstaff road, and Chapman drive. The projects were completed in 1933-34. The completion of Flagstaff Road and Chapman Drive completed a scenic loop to Highway 119 that the Boulder community used for recreational purposes. The amphitheater and the public structure on Flagstaff mountain still stand, providing a lasting reminder of the work of the CCC and are still used by the Boulder community.

Civilian Conservation Corps (U.S.)

Donor: Laurence T. Paddock Boulder, CO. Gift 1985-1990

As a founder and the first president of the Boulder Historical Society, Alva A. Paddock was the conduit for many materials donated to the Society, including these photographs. His son Laurence Paddock continued to acquire historical materials on behalf of the Boulder Historical Society.
On 2 Jan. 1986, Laurence Paddock signed a gift agreement confirming that custody of the archival portion of the A. A. Paddock collection had been transferred to the City of Boulder's Carnegie Branch Library for Local History. On 20 Jan. 1989, Mr. Paddock signed a second agreement confirming the Daily Camera's intention to turn over the files in its library to the A. A. Paddock collection of the Boulder Historical Society at the Carnegie Branch and/or main Boulder Public Library.
