Eben Fine photograph collection

This collection contains photographs taken by Eben G. Fine, most of them in Boulder and Boulder County. They are artistic scenes of local landmarks, such as the Flatirons, Boulder Creek and the University of Colorado campus, and also of mountain scenery, such as peaks, glaciers, and canyons. Four of the photographs are portraits of Native American Indians in native dress.

Eben Givens Fine was born in Missouri in 1865. He came to Boulder in 1886 to take a job in George Fonda's drug store. In 1907 he became part owner of Temple Drug Company. He was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving twice as its secretary. He helped raise subscriptions to build the Boulderado Hotel, and helped organize the Semi-Centennial Celebration in 1909. He was instrumental in bringing a group of Ute Indians to Boulder for the celebration. Fine lectured extensively on Boulder, making annual tours around the country to promote Boulder through slide lectures. He wrote a book of reminiscences shortly before his death called "Remembered Yesterdays." He died in 1957.
Each photograph is identified and signed by the photographer on the back. A few of the photographs of scenery are dated 1946, and a few of the Indian photographs are dated 1909; most are not dated. Most photographs have a number which refers to its description on the inventory list. A few have a number referring to a negative for that print.
Some of the photographs were taken on trips to Alaska, California, New Mexico and Arizona in 1936. Others still are portraits of Fine, his family and friends.

All are duplicates of Sturtevant photos available in BHS A. A. Paddock collections. In addition, 76 photographs of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Alaska have been deaccessioned.
