Mary "May" Wellman was the daughter of Sylvanus and Roumelia Towner Wellman. Sylvanus and his brothers Luther and Henry moved to Boulder in July 1859 and were one of the first families to begin farming in the area. According to the diary, May began working as a school teacher in the Silver Spruce School, District 33, in May of 1894. It is unknown how long she served as a school teacher. May married Charles B. Eastman in June 1901.
According to the book "Back to Basics: The Frontier Schools of Boulder County, Colorado, 1860-1960" by Anne Dyni, District 33 was formed in 1875. The location of the first 1880s school building (referenced in this diary) is unknown. The second school building, built in 1902, was located "at the base of Magnolia Hill in Boulder Canyon." Dyni also notes that while the official name of the school was Silver Spruce, the school was also known as the Bummer Gulch School and Six-Mile School (because of its distance from Boulder).
