A Boulder Daily Camera newspaper article dated September 21, 1961, that was attached to the photograph stated: "Next month the spotlight is on fire prevention. Leading up to Fire Prevention Week in October, the Camera will introduce Boulder citizens to their firemen. Pictured above, left to right, are: Assistant Fire Chief Richard McCutcheon, appointed in 1944, became assistant chief, January 1961; Chief George Morse, standing, appointed in 1934 and became chief December 1960; and Fire Marshall Kenneth Nicholas, appointed in 1952 and became fire marshall in 1961. All the men are married. Morse lives at 716 Maxwell and has two daughters, McCutcheon lives at 1827 Baseline Road and has one son and one daughter and Nicholas at 3010 13th Street, and has one son. They are in the Central Fire Department office where records of fires, fire losses, fire prevention inspections, fire department training and other activities are maintained. Behind the men are photos of former Chiefs Frank Johnson, recently retired, and the late Emil Johnson." The photograph is dated September 21, 1961.

Allen Mason, with hand on controls, directs other firemen in operation of the fire pump on a fire apparatus purchased in 1958. He lives at 3080 Ash Avenue. Left to right the men are: Harold Christensen, appointed this year, 1610 24th Street; Lt. Carl McLerran, appointed in 1955 and became a lieutenant in 1961, 2640 Mapleton; Howard Hunsinger, appointed in 1958 and lives at 3400 Valmont Road; Lt. Mason and Engineer Ray Jackson, appointed in 1958 and became an engineer this year. He lives at 765 38th Street and has three sons. The other men are also married and Christensen has one daughter; McLerran, four sons and Mason has two sons and two daughters." The photograph is dated October 3, 1961.

A Boulder Daily Camera newspaper article dated October 13, 1961, that was attached the photograph stated: "Fire Marshall Kenneth Nicholas directs a class in fire preventing training procedures. Weekly classes are held in this, fire fighting methods and first aid. Also, weekly sessions in fire fighting and rescue are held at the first training tower at Central Fire Station. Nicholas, standing, was appointed in 1952 and made fire marshal in 1961. He and his wife and son live at 3010 13th Street. Left to right at the table are: Lt. Paul Payne, appointed in 1946 and made lieutenant in 1958; William Traxler, appointed this year, and Engineer William Collins, appointed in 1954 and became engineer in 1958. Behind, left to right are: Lt. Ollie Colclasure, appointed in 1949 and becoming a lieutenant in 1958; Engineer Joseph Rohret, appointed 1957 and engineer in 1961 and William Love, appointed in 1959. Collins lives at 2245 15th Street and Rohret at 2950 Lorraine Court. Both have two sons and three daughters. Payne lives at 3095 9th Street and Traxler at 1812 17th Street, and both have one daughter. Love lives at 2255 Nicholl, has three sons and one daughter; Colclasure at 1919 7th Street and has two daughters." The photograph is dated September 20, 1961.

A Boulder Daily Camera newspaper article dated June 20, 1961, that was attached to the photograph stated: "Four firemen on the crew of Station 2 of the Boulder Fire Department check on plants that form part of the landscaping effort at the building, Baseline, and the Marshall Road. While John Booton and Ray Gommehs [Roy Gommels] check some of the shrubs, Carl McLerran and Leon Williams look on. The landscaping effort was undertaken by the city beautification committee of PLAN-Boulder, an organization of Boulder citizens. Landscape suppliers, the city and firms and individuals made contributions to the project to improve the grounds of the station at the Boulder entrance from the Turnpike." The photograph is dated June 20, 1961.

The hose must be loaded compactly so that a maximum amount of hose can be carried in the available space and yet feed out from the truck easily. Left to right, the men are: Lt. Donald Grass, appointed in October, 1942, and made a lieutenant in 1954; Richard Griebe, appointed in 1958; Gary Rutt, appointed in 1960, and Peter Ambler, appointed in 1959. All the men are married and Grass and Griebe have two sons. Rutt has one son and Amber has a son and two daughters." The photograph is dated September 27, 1961.

Walker, appointed in 1950 and became lieutenant in 1958; Engineer Leon Williams, appointed in 1957 and made an engineer in 1961; John Booton, appointed in 1960 and Roy Gommels, appointed this year. All the men are married; Walker lives at 2127 Walnut Street and Williams at 875 38th Street, both have one daughter; Booton lives at 850 38th Street, and both men have one son and one daughter." The large piece of equipment is a deluge nuzzle. It can be used from its mounted position on the fire apparatus or from a position at street level. It is used to apply a large amount of water to large fires. Left to right are: Richard McCutcheon, assistant chief, and the father of a son and daughter. McCutcheon was appointed in 1944 and became assistant chief in 1961. He and his family live at 1827 Baseline. Engineer Charles Case, 630 North Street, has two daughters, was appointed in 1958 and became engineer in 1961. Dean Carpenter, appointed in 1961, lives at 911 Portland Place and has a son and two daughters. P. Jacob Ringleman, appointed in 1958, lives at 805 36th Street and has two daughters. Weeden Tibbitts, appointed in 1959 and lives at 3250 Arrowwood with wife, son and three daughters. Karl Burnett, appointed in 1961. He lives at 3760 Davidson Place and has three daughters." Hickman, seated, signs the proclamation designating the week beginning October 8 as Fire Prevention Week. Standing, left to right are: Kenneth Nicholas, fire marshal for the Boulder department; Vearl Root, head of the Chamber of Commerce committee for fire safety, and Richard McCutcheon, assistant fire chief. The proclamation say in part: 'I (the mayor) call upon all departments and agencies of the city government to participate actively in a campaign for improved fire safety...I earnestly request every citizen of the community to take part in relieving hazardous conditions and making our city a safer community in which to live, work and play."
